Say Cheese! The Best Cheese Recipes We Found On Cheese Lover’s Day

We love food holidays here at HalfHourMeals.com, and there are lots of reasons why Cheese Lover’s Day is one of our absolute favorites. Did you know that the average American eats 31 pounds of cheese each year? Amazing, huh? Any food that we eat that regularly surely deserves its own day of the year to celebrate it. We scoured the web yesterday and found ourselves inspired by the huge number of delicious recipes containing a variety of different cheeses. So, take a look at these six dishes below that we have chosen as our favorites — you can visit the sites corresponding with each image number to grab the recipes for each of these tasty creations. Enjoy!

1 – This dish is a Beer & Cheese Macaroni created by the foodies over at Homemade by Holman. They used smoked cheddar, sharp white cheddar, mild cheddar, and American cheese, along with 1 cup of Sam Adams Oktoberfest beer, to create this delicious looking cheese dish.

2 – Caramelized Cheese Grilled Cheese? Okay, you got our mouths drooling! The folks at Closet Cooking came up with this delicious looking dish that takes grilled cheese to another level. Why would you want a simple grilled cheese ever again after seeing this?

3 – These Italian Cheese Straws were discovered at What’s Cookin’ Chicago and just had to be a part of this list. These would work well as an appetizer or a side dish to pretty much any kind of soup you could imagine.

4 – Baked macaroni and cheese is probably in my top five favorite dishes, so we had to include one of these in our list. The most delicious baked macaroni dish we could find was found over at MarthaStewart.com — a macaroni dish featuring Beecher’s flagship cheese sauce that looks phenomenal.

5 – This grilled cheese sandwich made with a pita was found over at GrilledCheeseSocial.com and was affectionately named the “Old Goat” because… well, you guessed it — it contains goat cheese! Alongside peppers and mushrooms, this goat cheese grilled cheese sandwich has a real artisan feel that adds a level of class to the classic grilled cheese dish. We would love to try this one!

6 – We found a great cheese appetizer over at BHG.com that is as simple to make as it looks. These cheese triangles would be an excellent appetizer and would be sure to put a smile on the face of any guest you have over.

Hazelnut Cake – Rocky Road – Egg – Cheese – Cognac

Hazelnuts are also called filberts. They have such a rich nutty flavor and it is evident even when this nut is blended with other ingredients. It has a presence that enhances most coffees and cream desserts. Filberts can be used chopped to embellish other dishes. They are really good to eat toasted, too. Chocolate and hazelnuts are such a good marriage. This cake makes my mouth water, because I know how great it would taste were I somehow able to reach through the screen.

Rocky Road ice cream is a favorite of many frozen dessert lovers. Those nuts and marshmallows hidden inside the creamy chocolate make this dessert an adventure. If you have never tried this confection, I do believe you will soon come to like it very much. When you have finished it the three main flavors remain on your palate for a while, extending your frozen experience.

We cannot forget The Egg Man. In America eggs are a staple of our breakfasts. They are used in many dishes and combined and blended to help other ingredients become something new. Eggs are wholesome, tasty and offer us a variety of ways to enhance our cooking. Everything from the ordinary, to more challenging dishes. Eggs round out our diet, providing much needed proteins and nutrients.

I have never met anyone who did not like cheese. Cheese and crackers are a way to break the ice at a cocktail party, or any social occasion for that matter. Whether you have a business meeting or an informal gathering, bring out the cheeseboard and crackers. Everyone will be reaching for a few more and the room will soon feel relaxed and convivial.

June 1st Hazelnut Cake. June 2nd Rocky Road ice cream. June 3rd the Egg. June 4th Cheeses and Cognacs. Cognac is a heady way to cleanse you palate. It is a liquor meant to be sipped and it warms you right to your toes. Before long you will wonder why you felt so tense, and the air takes on a golden glow. Cognac is strong, memorable, and goes with many types of food. It is usually served at the end of the meal. June is going to be warm, summery and delicious!

Say Cheese

We’ve heard it all our lives and most often when someone is ready to snap our photograph, “Say Cheese!” There’s a lot to smile about because this super food comes from all sorts of animals, in all shapes, flavors and sizes. Since the first time cheese was created people have been experimenting with it and taking all sorts of liberties with its properties. They have done everything from promoting texture, color, age, portioning, enhancing its flavor, and even further modified it from its original complex innocence by creating cheesy meals, snacks, and so much more.

As I began my trek looking into this versatile and delicious member of the dairy group, I was first amazed by how many varieties there are from which to choose.  I was familiar with cheese from cows, goats and sheep, but it doesn’t stop there. Think outside the box: buffalo, camels, yaks, moose and reindeer! You heard me right. Who knew? Just about 10,000 years ago people began breeding mammals for their milk and turning it into cheese.  They watched their animals’ diet because it greatly influenced the taste of the milk and thus of the cheese.

Our ancestors found that when milk was churned into cheese, they could shape it and store it in cool dry places. That this food lasted longer and provided nutrition for their families was a real bonus. Over time they figured out many ways to add this precious ingredient to their meals, in-between their bread slices, as side dishes, or just ate it on its own. Cheese was definitely worth smiling about.

I bet I could spend years getting an education on this topic. It is so interesting that I encourage you to delve into this tasty subject, too. If you have children it would mean hours upon hours of family entertainment researching the many styles and varieties of cheese. There are dairy farms that offer tours to the public and it is a good way to taste test different cheeses. The next time you stroll down the cheese or deli aisles and focus on the dairy section you’ll know you’ve stumbled on to a huge subject. It is incredible how many choices we have right inside our grocery stores.

Eat some on its own, put it on vegetables, melt it in fondue pots, create a soufflé, cream it in icings, serve it with fruits or pair it with wines. Shred some on top of your pasta dishes, layer it between lasagna noodles, or toss some on scrambled eggs or on top of your pizza. It is astounding just how many ways we use this product without realizing it. Cheese has an almost perfect personality and likes to get along with most foods. It’s hard to go wrong by incorporating cheese in practically any meal and presenting it at table on special occasions. Just remember to “Say Cheese” and smile.
